Let's take a nice, Glen "Sliverdick" Yeadon style pure-democratic vote:

All for putting Glen "Sliverdick" Yeadon up against the wall, and
filling him full of lead, say "AYE!" All opposed, say "NAY"

Let's see how much Sliverdick likes democracy now.

Depends on various issues; I can't say I know. Some X implementations
use framebuffers, which, I would think, map a region of video ram
as though it were some sort of temporary file. One might even
mmap() to it -- which would be very cool, although there are
going to be issues regarding colors and depths. (But then, there
already is.)

x86 variants of X are going to take advantage of the video registers.
I don't know the details, but I know it's not a frame buffer and is
a different implementation; it's also specific to each chip type,
which can be annoying (lessee, is it Rage? S3? Mach9000? etc. etc.),
especially to the rank newbie. Fortunately, autoprobe finds most cards.

One issue is that cards seem to be limited in the ability to present
memory; one has to set page registers to "display" part of the video
RAM to the main processor. At least, such is my recollection.

All of the accelerators make life even more interesting.

Well here is Christian (non-Roman Catholic) theology in a nutshell:

Man rebelled against God (genesis). The punishment for this is judgement
by God and condemnation. God created a way out of this for Man. God
creates covenants with Man as part of this plan (Noah, Abraham, Moses, etc.).
God creates laws for Man to follow as a condition for salvation. Man has
no hope of obtaining salvation from judgement because Man is unable to
obey these laws. God requires a blood sacrifice as atonement for this
disobedience (sin). God provides the ultimate blood sacrifice with
Jesus Christ, his Son. Man can claim this free gift of salvation by
believing in and having faith in Jesus Christ. This faith does not
eliminate the need for believers to obey God's laws, but failure to do
so does not take away their salvation and freedom from God's judgement.
True faith in Jesus Christ brings about a change in one's heart and love
for others is desired along with a desire to not disobey God's laws.
Jesus will return and enact final judgement some day in his own good time.

All joking aside, it amuses me to see IBM, HP and others (TiVo?) starting to
make great profits off of Linux. The only people not getting paid are the
coders.

DOH!

Great idea, guys. And now Bruce Perens is trying to weasel software patents in
exchange for this 'free' software? I love having access to source code, and I
am even lauching an open source project, but I really think programmers should
get paid for quality work. Directly.

When Microsoft Linux comes out, kiss your asses goodbye. You'll all be pumpin'
for the man.

Just as rude people IRL tend to rationalize their rudeness by saying, for
instance, that they are only
rude because people are assholes, so do newsgroup invaders and other net
abusers (such as Son
of GORTICIAN in the writeup that was formerly above), rationalize their
abuses by calling their victims
  "fuckheads" or the like.

Have you tried running NT v4 or below on a laptop? It would
appear not because it was horrible. Also 85/98 were cheaper and
ran faster on constrained hardware.
