One is the result of a pathogen (bacterial ulcer), and the other
is from unknown origin.

I have both SuSE 7.1 and RedHat 7.1 and the first thing I
did after installing both was download the latest 2.4.x
kernel from ftp.us.kernel.org, used the very nice
make xconfig to configure the kernel for the hardware
and features of my systems, built and installed them.
The SuSE 7.1 and RedHat 7.1 systems work just great
with the kernels that I built and installed. No problems
whatsoever.
I could be wrong, but I don't think that either SuSE or
RedHat modify the actual kernel source in their distributions.
They certainly do custom configurations of the kernel for
their distros, but you can do that too with make xconfig
(or make menuconfig, or make config, etc.).

Due to a properly designed system of LIBRARY VERSIONING,

Wrong.
Unix/Linux has a properly designed library-version system, so that
two applications which use DIFFERENT versions of a library with the
same name (say, libc....libc3.2 vs libc5.7) can EACH use the PROPER
library without interfering with the other's access to the library
that IT needs.
Meanwhile, in Windows land, multiple versions of ANY library file are....forbidden.
