Now, you can use make-kpkg to create a kernel using an initrd. It
should be possible to boot from network card unsing PXE and then boot a
kernel, which uses an initrd. This could load your Gigabit kernel
module and then start the fai installation.

I would be very nice if you or someone else can try this and post a
summary how it works.
