I had the same problem with an Intel motherboard running a P133 and
RH6.1.
I couldn't fix it so I disabled the apmd (power management daemon). My
drives don't go to sleep, but the clock is always right.

Is it the Alcatel?

Look in the Links section near the end for the Alcatel USB project. Some
hoop jumping, maybe.
I'd love to hear the rationale for the price difference. Assuming they
have one.

You may try this:
=======================================================================
Note that Epox has a fix for these types of Kernel panics
http://www.epox.com/html/english/support/motherboard/Get.asp?Article=1271
POSSIBLE SOLUTION
This issue appears to be related to a Processor Serial Number
function supported by Redhat that the
Duron does not. There are two possible resolutions depending
upon the status of your installation.
1. When first installing Redhat 6.2 (or 6.1) you will be
asked at some stage if you require any special
parameters for the kernel. At this point enter:
x86_serial_nr=1
Once installed, this parameter is already in the kernel and
there is no need to do more.
2. If Redhat was already installed type at the lilo prompt:
linux x86_serial_nr=1
Once you boot, recompile the kernel with the: "Disable Serial
Number at boot" left clear.

Sorry about crossposting, but I wanted as many people as possible to read
this message.
My question is: Is there any software out there that can identify an unknown
LAN adapter? I recently bought a used computer from our university. The hard
drive was of course erased and there weren't any drivers etc. left on it. It
has an ISA LAN-adapter installed, which I cannot identify and there are no
manual or anything. I had the Linux network config program probe for the LAN
card but it was unable to recognise it.
Please answer me (preferably by mail) if you know a solution to my problem.

The default RH6.2 install mistakes Duran/Tbirds
for PIIIs. Only way I got it to boot was
removing the drive and putting it on another
system, then recompiled the kernel with the beta
2.4.0-test6 kernel. moved drive back and it would
boot fine. I to recompile a couple of more times
to tweek out some settings, but everything works
great.
I've got RH6.2 running on a Tbird K7 800mhz
Asus A7V (with linux running off the ATA100
promise controller)
Sound blaster Live
Viper770 ultra
128 PC133

Check the chip ID, most LAN chips (actually, most computer chip) have their ID
stamped on the chip.
You should have enough responses and complaints from people reading one
newsgroup (comp.os.linux.hardware, in my case), it is not necessary to
cross-post.

I added this line to my conf.modules and it did not work. The other
relevent line in there is
alias block-major-8 ide-scsi
I've tried various combinations with and without these lines no
success. I've also tried adding an append="hdd=ide-scsi" to my
lilo.conf to no avail. At this point would be satified without an
autoloading module. I'd rather not have to recompile the kernel, as
something is wrong whenever I try to compile the kernel ( a seperate
problem)

I'm looking at the asus p3c-s motherboard and even if its specs
says it works fine with simm/dimm rams (using the adaptor, of

Subject: HP LJ Series II, header suppression
Date: 23 Aug 2000 20:39:57 GMT
Hello:
printer: HP Laserjet Series II
Printing is fine in Wordperfect, no headers as desired.
Printing text files from KDE always prints a date/time/page number header.
The header line is cut in half vertically, the top half not visible. This
half height header is 3/16 inches from the top. I assume it only prints
half the line because the printer cannot print to the edge of the paper.
The :sh line in my printcap file apparently has no effect. The same thing
happens if I leave it in or take it out.
Is this an issue related to my printer that is not correctable?
Anyone with the same printer have this issue?
This printer is currently out of service, and this header problem and Linux
compatibility are 2 of my considerations in whether or not I fix it or
replace it.
Thank You.

Although you cannot use apmd because of it's effect on the clock, you
can put your drives to sleep using hdparm with the -S option.
See the man page of hdparm for proper values.

Subject: cdrecord problem : 'read track info'

hi everybody,
i've been struggling with my cd burner for a few days now. off and on i
can burn a good cd, so i think my setup is right. but then, evry once in
a while, i just can't get it work right and produce one coaster after
another.
i got a bit closer now, but don't understand what the messages i get
really mean. can anybody help out ?
- 8 tracks seem to burn fine. then it wants to start recording track #9,
hangs and eventually bails out.
i have marked the place where the error occurs with ###########
below.
any idea for a remedy would be greately appreciated. is the problem
maybe cdparanoia, which does not
extract the tracks properly ? how can i tell before burning ?
cdrecord is the latest version from mandrake. i have to be root to
burn, else nothing goes,
even though
-rwxr-sr-x 1 root cdwriter 163888 Jun 2
12:25 /usr/bin/cdrecord*
but that just on the side.
