Check the jumpers on the hard drive. Yes, again. There are THREE settings;
only drive on the channel, master with a slave attached, slave attached
to a master. If you have another drive on the channel, check THOSE jumpers.
Yes, again.

Hi there,

Mandrake ships distributions compiled specially for 486. They also have ISO
images. Check them at http://www.linux-mandrake.com

Hope this helps

You might want to try a Debian distribution.
My perception is that Debian by default installs
fewer apps and services by default than SUSE or RedHat.

I had exactly the same problem with hauppauge (bt878). Only solved it by
downloading the non-kernel bttv tarball, compilling and installing that and
making a note of how that installed the various modules (video4linux, i2c
etc and with what parameters). Then I copied the insmod lines to the
relevant rc.d (local) and reverted to using the kernel modules. When I
re-install I simply re-edit the rc.d file and it works.

Hi,

I'm running Mandrake 7.1 on a PII-233 with on-board AIC-7880. I have 2
HDs and a CD-ROM on my system. The CD-ROM and one HD are 8bit devices,

Hi,

I'm trying to get RealPlayer audio/video streaming on my
RedHat Linux 7.0 intel system, a dual processor Dell PIII
Precision 610 with an integrated Crystal CS4237B soundchip
(soundblaster compatible).

The error message from the Real Audio 7.01 Unix player is:

"Cannot open audio device, another application may be using it"

How can I determine what other application, if any, is indeed using
the audio device? Is there a test program which will tell me
whether the problem is a hardware or software problem?
I have RealPlayer working fine on RedHat 7 on my laptop, so I know
this is possible as long as the hardware is supported.

Thanks,
Charlie

Subject: Still not happy with dma usage after ide patch
Date: Wed, 25 Oct 2000 00:20:52 +0200

Hi,

After a few weeks of playing around with RH7 and its default kernel, and
trying to patch it in a simple way just to get dma working on a PIIX
bridge (Intel 440LX), it seemed to work. But...

1. The first two lines at boot (hda=.. hdb=..) still show "pio" at all
modes, while (U)DMA and DMA is shown now for both drives after the drive
listing, which is correct, since there is a UDMA-2 (Win) and a PIO 4
(Linux) in the system. BIOS setup ok, udma and lba enabled etc.

2. Read performance of the Linux disk after enabling dma and other
hdparm options, is _exactly_ the same as before applying the patch,
which is about 4.8MB/sec. (about 14 for the first hd).

So the only thing new is the proper recognition of the disk, exept for
the fact that the chs values are still needed as kernel params,
otherwise physical chars are shown (which makes no difference in
performance either).

Is this some form of misconfiguration? What if not?

Have you tried 'hdparm -d1 /dev/hda'. Depending on how you compiled your
kernel, you may have to take this extra step. man hdparm for other
tricks.

Also, I would suggest bonnie for hd benchmarking. At least, here it
is more reliable.

Hi all,

I bought and installed a Kyocera FS-1000 printer, and it prints fine under
linux. Running printtool, there were no Kyocera printers listed, so I
pretended to have a Brother HL1240, and that's what is spec'd in my

graphincs and the output was acceptable. Sometimes I think the text is a
little light. My question is: does anyone suggest an alternative printer
type to be specified in /etc/printcap that will produce a higher print
quality? It's not that I'm unhappy with it - I just wonder of it could be
better.

Thanks,

look through your system logfiles to find whatever (if any) messages the

Hope I am not asking too much! :-)
