Hmm could it be something in your X-windows desktop
(gnome/kde/whatever) that locks the soundcard??

First: This isn't a mailing list, it's a newsgroup.

Second: Try www.dejanews.com, or rather the Google site it directs you
to. Searchable archives of all USENET dating back to 1995, or
something.

Subject: problems installing DLINK DWL-650 and the WLAN package under Linux-Mandrake
8.0
Date: Sat, 12 May 2001 21:44:02 GMT

Hi all,

I am having a devil of a time getting my wireless PCcard nic card
working under linux. Its a DLink DWL-650 pc card.

Originally I had problems because my distribution didn't install the
kernel and pcmcia sources by default. I installed kernel-2.2.19 and
pcmcia-cs-3.1.25 within the /usr/src folders.

Here's the content of my WLAN's "configure.mk" file:

LINUX_SRC=/usr/src/linux-2.2.19
PCMCIA_SRC=/usr/src/pcmcia-cs-3.1.25
MODULES_DIR=/lib/modules
INST_EXEDIR=/sbin
DESTDIR=(empty)
MAKE_ISA=Y
MAKE_CS=Y

I switch to the WLAN directory and first do a "make clean" and then do
a "make all" which is where I get some errors, before it eventually
bombs out.

Here's a log of my xterm session when I run the make commands, and the
errors that I am getting. Maybe someone can explain to me what the
problem is because I'm at a loss.

Hello Andy,

at the moment, I neither use esd nor the kde sound daemon, which may or may (not
block?) /dev/dsp. I use the spartanic twm (the default XFree Windowmanager).

Further: When I let play a sound under a console and quickly switch to another console
and start X, the system freezes and the sound loops...

The linux-2.4.4/Documentation/sound/Introduction says:
"2) If you get motor-boating (the same sound or part of a
sound clip repeated), you probably have either an IRQ
or DMA conflict. Move the card to another IRQ or DMA
port. This has happened to me when playing long files
when I had an IRQ conflict."

/proc/dma says
 4: cascade

The question is: Is this a dma conflict and how should I solve it?
I cannot (for example) simply pass dma=1 as an argument to snd-card-emu10k1(alsa)
oder emu10k1 (see below). But is there another way to do this, I don't know yet??

bash-2.04# modinfo -p snd-card-emu10k1
snd_index int array (min = 1, max = 8), description "Index value for the EMU10K1
soundcard."
snd_id string array (min = 1, max = 8), description "ID string for the EMU10K1
soundcard."
snd_dac_frame_size int array (min = 1, max = 8), description "DAC frame size in kB for
the EMU10K1 soundcard."
snd_adc_frame_size int array (min = 1, max = 8), description "ADC frame size in kB for
the EMU10K1 soundcard."
snd_seq_ports int array (min = 1, max = 8), description "Number of sequencer ports for
Emu10k1 WaveTable synth."
snd_max_synth_voices int array (min = 1, max = 8), description "Maximum number of
voices for WaveTable"
bash-2.04# modinfo -p emu10k1 # CreativeLabs...
bash-2.04# modinfo -p emu10k1 # Kernel...
bash-2.04#

I've got a Hercules Prophet II MX video card that uses the AGP bus on
the motherboard. When I boot up Linux, or when I run Xconfigurator,
and I look in /var/log/XFree86.0.log, I see some messages that make me
wonder if the nv_drv.o driver can see an AGP card. It has the following
line: PCI:*(1:0:0) Nvidia unknown chipset (0x0110) rev 161
It also complains (EE) Failed to load Module "v41". What's that?
And the last 3 lines are as follows:
(EE) No devices detected
Fatal server error
no screens found

So have I bought a video card that cannot be supported by Linux?

It seems to be an error with your CD or harddisk. Try to verify that you
can read all of the files in your CD or harddisk without errors.

Subject: Realtek NIC working?
Date: 12 May 2001 19:20:04 -0400

I am running Red Hat 6.1, with kernel 2.2.12. I just set this up in the
past few days to use as a server when I get a DSL line in the next month
or so. Right now it isn't hooked up to any network.

I have a Realtek PCI card (NE2000 compatible) installed. I have compiled
the kernel to load the NE2000 module, the NE2000PCI module and the rt8201
module. At bootup, the computer hangs for about a minute when it reaches
the "bringing up interface eth0" it comes back as "failed". I checked the
/var/log/messages file and it shows several references to finding the
REaltek card and an NE2000 compatible card (2 entries?) at the correct
address. At shutdown I get a message indicating that the eth0 device is
unloading.

Is my card working? If so why the "failed" message when I boot up? If
not, it looks like the system is finding the card correctly, but unable to
use it. I had the same card in a Windows box and it was working in that
capacity.

TIA

I have a Seagate Scorpion 8 DAT tape drive. I need to turn on
hardware compression, but I can't figure out how. Can someone help me
out? I've tried "mt -f /dev/st0 compression on" and "mt -f /dev/st0
setdensity 0x24" but nothing seems to help. It is a DDS-2 drive (8GB)
that is stuck on DDS-1 (2-GB) mode.

I'm using Tapeware for linux, but that shouldn't matter. It can tell
me that compression is off, but can't do much about it...

Thanks!

It could be that two drivers are getting loaded for the card. Some of
these cards that can act as a ne2kpci will respond to both the ne2kpci
driver and the correct chipset one. Try removing support for the rtl
driver from the kernel and see if it works..

I have a soundblaster live value and have followed the directions in the
article in the SuSE sdb called "ALSA update for SuSE SuSE 6.4/7.0/7.1 and do
not have sound. After the alsa update my card was recognized by alsaconfig.
However when it trys to adjust the volumes and change the mixer it fails. No
asound.conf is created. Here are the error messages. I have verified that
the sound drivers are loaded. They even say this using "alsasound status".

"Could not initialize..."

"No mixer config in the /etc/asounf.conf. You have to unmute your card.
Mixer 0/0 'open error."

I've even tryed manually unmuting the mixer and even accessing it via amixer
but I always get the message about the "Mixer 0/0 ' open error. Even when I
try different device names this happens. Thanks.

Subject: Nvidia drivers. Can I use RPM?
Date: Sat, 12 May 2001 23:55:37 GMT

I have SuSE 7.0 with 2.2.16 kernel. However a patch was downloaded for it
because of the Promise IDE Controller and Geforce 2 that I have. This was in
the form of K_EIDE.RPM. Anyway I've been trying to get the Nvidia drivers to
work fine and have been having problems. (the nv driver in Xfree works
fine). What I wonder first of all is do I need to use the source or tar from
Nvidia or can I just use the RPM's they provide. Does the patch I got for
the kernel from SuSE make the Nvidia RPM's non usable for me? They seem to
load fine however I can never make it into X. I'll get a black screen with
no errors in the XFree log. IT only stops after "Write-combining range".
Thanks in advance.

Also if I installed the Promise/Geforce patch for the kernel did it update
the header files automatically or do I need to do this?

Does anyone have the flash card reader for the Epson 875DCS working under
Linux?

How do I tell Linux this is just a compact flash card reader, and have it treat
it as a removable ide drive (just like it does on my laptop)?

Should I try modifying the kernel to treat it just like a sandisk USB
card reader?

I'm using a compact flash PCMCIA adapter rather than the smart media
adapter that came with the printer (only 12 bucks for the adapter).

The flash card reader shows up fine as a removable drive under windows 98.

I'm running redhat 7.1, with their standard 2.4.2-2 kernel.

I've gotten my Epson 875DCS printing under linux (slow for images, but
the quality is fine), and my camera working with gtkam (USB devices).

The card reader shows up in /proc/bus/usb/devices as:

C:* #Ifs= 1 Cfg#= 1 Atr=c0 MxPwr= 2mA
I: If#= 0 Alt= 0 #EPs= 2 Cls=07(print) Sub=01 Prot=02 Driver=usblp
E: Ad=01(O) Atr=02(Bulk) MxPS= 64 Ivl= 0ms
E: Ad=82(I) Atr=02(Bulk) MxPS= 64 Ivl= 0ms
T: Bus=01 Lev=02 Prnt=05 Port=01 Cnt=02 Dev#= 6 Spd=12 MxCh= 0
D: Ver= 1.00 Cls=00(>ifc ) Sub=00 Prot=00 MxPS=16 #Cfgs= 1
P: Vendor=04b8 ProdID=0601 Rev= 1.00
S: Manufacturer=EPSON
S: Product=SP 875DCS Storage
S: SerialNumber=CA02007S8LQ3

The printer (works fine) shows up as:

C:* #Ifs= 1 Cfg#= 1 Atr=e0 MxPwr=100mA
I: If#= 0 Alt= 0 #EPs= 1 Cls=09(hub ) Sub=00 Prot=00 Driver=hub
E: Ad=81(I) Atr=03(Int.) MxPS= 1 Ivl=255ms
T: Bus=01 Lev=02 Prnt=05 Port=00 Cnt=01 Dev#= 7 Spd=12 MxCh= 0
D: Ver= 1.00 Cls=00(>ifc ) Sub=00 Prot=00 MxPS=64 #Cfgs= 1
P: Vendor=04b8 ProdID=0005 Rev= 1.00
S: Manufacturer=EPSON
S: Product=USB Printer
S: SerialNumber=CA0200007280851560

Thanks.
