I'm using an adaptec 29160 with 3 SCI IBM (160 MBPS) on Linux

Is there an scsi adaptator problem or a disk problem ? I'm in
doubt (see logs below).

After reboot, messages disappears. After many hours, no more kernel

Hi

I need to offer backup software that will be used under RedHat 6.2 on Compaq
ML530 with DLT 110/220 drive or 50/100 AIT drive. It should be advanced
software as it will be used to backup over 100 GBs Oracle base. I need very
fast response. Thanks in advance

/var/log/messages should indicate what the card is recognized as
(for example) hdc.

If the partition is indicated as (say) hdc1, you would use

   mount -t fat /dev/hdc1 /mnt/tmp

Hope this helps.

As you can imagine, this laptop is slow if used with a GUI. You can use
something like "Blackbox" or "FVWM 2" as a window manager.
I have just been using TWM which is the default window manager for
RedHat. Nothing fancy, but it works very well. You may want to turn on a
virtual resolution such as 800X600 by editing the xconfig file.

My next project is to get the smartstations ethernet working. I have it
turned of in the BIOS because I have a PCMCIA card, but I want to get
the other going just to try it. Any ideas on this one?

Thats just the hardware I currently have, though I plan to buy another LAN
card for the windows box, probably the same one as in the linux box as I
have experience getting it to work in either os. Also, I believe the modem
is HCF, so I am probably screwed. The modem currently in the windows box
is essentially a ghost: it came preloaded in a compaq desktop purchased
recently, has no driver support anywhere and is listed as a generic modem
in all windows config programs. That too is an HCF modem.

Thanks Richard,

I think, the partition is correctly recognized as /dev/sda3, but I can't
mount it because of the FAT12 type. This is a real old msdos partition
type. Does linux support this?

Can anyone tell me why printer ports are not detected by Linux, neither on
installation, startup or by running kudzu.
I have an Oki4w printer, works fine on dual os (win98), is recognized by
bios and by win.
However there seems to be some kind of confusion between systems , bios vs
windows, about beeing 03bcH or 0378 for lp0 or lp1
In bios lpt1 is 0378
In win lpt1 is 03bc IRQ = 7
It's all very confusing and I find no way of detecting whats going on in
Linux besides lp waiting for device ( lp0 or lp1 )to be ready.
Any suggestion welcome.

Subject: Help with assigning eth0/eth1 to proper NICs
Date: Tue, 15 May 2001 17:04:04 -0400

Hi,
I've got 2 3c509s in a my Linux box (Mandrake 8). One is an ISA card, and
one is built on the Motherboard. Anyway, they are being setup with one as
eth0 and the other as eth1 (obviously). What I want to do is flip that
assignment (long story having to do with cable provider and scripts I've
already written). I want mac 00:10:4b:ce:11:55 to be eth0 and
00:c0:4f:c4:33:37 to be eth1. Here is the current output from ifconfig -a:

eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:C0:4F:C4:33:37
          BROADCAST MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
          RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0

          collisions:0 txqueuelen:100
          RX bytes:0 (0.0 b) TX bytes:0 (0.0 b)
          Interrupt:5 Base address:0x220

eth1 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:10:4B:CE:11:55
          inet addr:24.147.19.101 Bcast:24.147.23.255 Mask:255.255.248.0

          Interrupt:10 Base address:0x230

I believe that the IRQs and IOs are being setup by PNP, especially since
I've tried the 3c5x9setup executable, changed the IRQ and IO, and they are
effectively ignored.

I've followed the Ethernet-HOWTO regarding eth0/eth1 assignment and setup
the /etc/modules.conf as follows:

alias eth0 3c509
alias eth1 3c509
options 3c509 io=0x230,io=0x220

But I get the following error output after running modprobe:

[root@h00104bce1155 net]# modprobe 3c509
/lib/modules/2.4.3-20mdk/kernel/drivers/net/3c509.o.gz: invalid

Any help/ideas is greatly appreciated.

yes. i believe this is true for ia32 processors such as the p-3 xeon.

what is the situation for 64 bit processors such as ultrasparc or
alpha? these might have larger limits on memory usage.

you seem willing to part with large coin since you are considering the
intel wallet vaccuum -- maybe equipment from, e.g., sun would be
competitive in price/performance?

Correct. aic7xxx *is* the driver for both of these cards/chipsets. But

I'm not familiar with those commands -- are they BRU specific? What
does 'mt -f /dev/nst0 status' (or whatever the proper tape device is)
say? What does 'dmesg' say when this happens? Is there anything in
/var/log/messages? It sounds like you are having intermittent SCSI
issues.

In 2.4.3, the default aic7xxx driver was changed from the original one
maintained by Doug Ledford at Redhat to one descended from the FreeBSD
driver. See <http://people.redhat.com/dledford/aic7xxx.html> for more
info. That may be the other driver you're hearing about. But, as RH
7.1 is based on 2.4.2, the aic7xxx driver you're using is still the
original one.

> Any information anyone can provide us with would be greatly appreciated in

As I said above, this sounds like a SCSI hardware issue. What devices are
on the chain? Do you have good (active) termination on both ends of
the chain? How long is the chain in total? Can you get it to work
by taking other devices off the chain?

It may be time to give it a fresh goat...

3ware sells IDE-RAID cards that do RAID 5, although I *have* heard some
rumblings about how good the RAID 5 actually is.

If you want to look at an external solution, you can look at IDE-SCSI RAID.
I bought such a system from Synetic (www.synetic.net), and like it very much.
Zero-D also sels such systems.

As was pointed out last time this thread came out (google is (should be)
your friend), you may be able to put together a SCSI RAID (based on,
e.g., a Mylex controller) for not too much more.

Your modprobe binary probably is out of date. It likely is trying to find
the sound modules in /lib/modules/<kernel_version>/misc and the 2.4.X sound
modules are in /lib/modules/2.4.X/kernel/drivers/sound.

# cd /lib/modules/2.4.X/kernel/drivers/sound
# mkdir /lib/modules/2.4.X/misc
# cp * /lib/modules/2.4.X

Then execute modprobe snd-card-ens1370 and see if it works.

Actually, I'm currently running Solaris 5.8 on various Sun hardware
but looking to switch to Linux & Intel-based equipment for cost
and performance reasons.
So far, memory sizing is the biggest issue with going to Intel plaforms.
Maybe I'll have to wait until IA-64 hardware comes out...
