A long shot, but there's a possibility it could be a PMTUD (Path MTU Discovery) issue. I haven't seen one of these for a long time, but there could be some rogue routers or workstation configs out there. Try pinging it with a big packet size and DF set (Google for more details, it's a bit hazy).
