No problem.. install a new one on another partition..
And add the oldone to your new lilo.conf

If you install leafnode as news-server, you can define filters for groups
and can limit size and number of lines. Leafnode is fairly simple to
install. Your newsserver is then localhost and you can use any client.

You would be well advised to take this machine off the net
immediately and make sure you have all un-needed daemons
disabled before re-connecting.

Rpc.statd is part of NFS and it is really dangerous to have that
open to the internet. It would not be too surprising if your
machine has already been compromised.

Get knode and compile it from source. It works fine.

Are you just backing up the server, or do you want to backup other machines
as well? If it's just the server, there's always the standard Unix
dump/restore. Make sure to upgrade to the latest versions, however
(available at dump.sourceforge.net), as active maintenance was only restarted
a little while ago and old versions were rather buggy. Dump/restore
does all the things you mentioned, and the man pages are rather easy
to understand.

There are lots of other tools as well, such as afio, cpio, and tar.

If you want to backup other machines on the network, amanda (www.amanda.org)
is a *very* nice tool that uses dump/restore and/or tar to do backups
of most any Unix machine to a central tape server.

Hi,

I'm trying to set up a dialondemand server, but I'm having a problem :
When diald connects and tries to bring ppp up, it fails and hangs up.

I installed diald other times and never had this problem. Any ideas ?

Have you given any thought to keeping the "Windows" disk and erasing
all the Windows stuff (i.e., everything but the boot block) and
using it for other things? You can never have too much disk space,
or enough disk drives. You might put / on one drive (the one where
it is now), and stuff like /tmp and /var and /home on the other.
Figure out which one is used the least and put your swap on that
one. etc. Getting rid of the Windows code is a good move in any
case, but why not keep the drive?

How do I get Lilo on the Master Boot Record.

I used to use just a combination of find and cpio commands in a
shell script executed by cron. I had one script that I ran on Sunday
mornings that did a full backup, and one that I ran the rest of the
week that did an incremental backup. There is nothing wrong with
continuing to do that and, IMAO, no need to buy a commercial
product. I read about the advantages of the BRU backup software and
use it now. The advantages of BRU are so slight that I would not
bother with it to begin with (if at all), but I continue to use it
for almost all my backup needs.

I run the backups at about 1AM Monday-Saturday, and a bit after 3AM
on Sunday (to avoid the Daylight Savings Time problems).

One exception is that I run IBM's DB2 UDB dbms and that has
peculiarities that make it better to use the IBM backup utility
instead, though if you understand DB2 well enough, you could still
use find and cpio if you can take down the dbms when doing the
backups. Not all users have that luxury.

I would warn against tar for tape backups, because if you get a
failure, it is next to impossible to proceed past the point of
failure on the tape.

Using find and cpio make it easy to do both full and incremental
backups. When I do a full backup, I touch a file to set the time.
When I do an incremental backup, I tell find to get only those files
newer than the one I touched. Right now, I have not filled my two
hard drives, so I can do a full backup onto an 8Gbyte DDS-2 tape.
Because of that, I do not do incremental backups, but if my disks
fill up too much, I will start doing that.

Since my two machines are hooked together on a tiny 100MHz LAN, and
since the tape drive on the other machine broke, I have this machine
(the one with the DDS-2 tape drive) do backups for both machines. My
backup scheme does not even really know that there are two machines,
since the other machine runs an NFS server that exports the
directories that I need to back up. It even backs up stuff from the
Windows partition on that machine since Linux, which is usually
running there, can see it and export it to this machine.
