I suppose you are trying to run an SMP kernel on a UP machine. As has
already been suggested, you should seriously consider running a UP
kernel if you have but one processor.

In Bourne/K/bash, the following should work:

exec 2>&1
./commandname | tee logfile

can every skript that runs forever ("while [ 1 ] do ... done")
be run as a daemon. i tried running such a skript by adding
"skriptname &" to "/init.d/boot.local" but it did not work.
i didn't try it without the &, because i was not sure if
the machine will still startup then or if it will freeze
in my skript...what is the correct way to let a command be
executed frequently every xxx seconds from startup ?

Ah. Now we're getting somewhere. How, exactly, do I run the map
installer?

other than the 'serial' line, mine looks pretty much identical - but I
haven't run the map installer. I imagine that's the problem.... Thanks a

Well, I haven't specified anything, nor compiled anything. I'm
using the boot diskette, type "rescue" at the boot: prompt, and if things
were working right, at some point should get prompted for the rescue
diskette. Doesn't get that far, obviously.

<SNIP>

I'm afraid I don't comprehend any of this; the hard disk is IDE, but I'm
booting from the boot floppy, shouldn't have anything to do with
hard disks, (except for trying to get access to the HD, of course I've never
had to try a rescue boot before, so I don't know what's supposed to happen)
supposed to end up prompted to insert the rescue diskette,
but doesn't get that far. I'm using the boot diskette that came with RedHat
6.1. What I'm wondering is if I might have a disk failure, however this
disk is dual boot, and I can get into Win95 (arrggg!), which is now my only
access to the 'net.

There is not much audio processing going on in either Linux or your sound
card when playing CD's. It's pretty much the CD-ROM player which is
responsible for playing the CD. The audio output of the CD player is
simply lead through the sound card's audio mixer and that's it.
You could (almost) accomplish this without an OS in place...

This sounds like your sound card (driver) isnt't setup correctly.
Check IRQ and DMA settings in Windows and compare those to the settings
in Linux (cat /proc/interrupts; cat /proc/dma). Something's wrong here.
Try playing a large wav-file and I bet this will display the same behaviour.

Greetings,

Ton.

It must have been innovative when it was first placed. The telephone
was patented, but how innovative is it TODAY? This patent has expired,
the one you mention maybe not.

I'm not saying it's a smart logic, I'm just telling you what the logic
is (should be!).

Also check that something like /sbin/swapon -a is in your init
scripts:

# grep -r swapon /etc/rc.d/

If nothing is found, you should add /sbin/swapon -a as soon as
possible in you init sequence.

You are right to worry about the script hanging if you don't use '&'.

Your method is reasonable, though there are other ways:

- have a line int /etc/inittab that respawns the task; here your
script would have to sleep xxx seconds before exiting.
- run it with cron (man cron; man crontab)

Looks like your 2 logical partitions (items 3 and 4) completely fill your
extended partition. Sounds right to me.

Subject: Clone an Linux machine (how)?

Hello,

I have a linux box (2cpu) setup just the way I like it. I have just got
another box and would like to add it to the network. I would like to have
everything the same (except for the IP and hostname). What is the best
way to do this copy? Note that the new machine comes completely empty.
The existing machine has a CDR, and the / partition is probably small
enough to fit on it, if compressed. (BTW, we are running RH7, and I have
the RH7 bootable CD).

Thanks,
Eugene

Hi everyone!

I just downloaded the latest version of Flash-Player for Linux (5.0r47) and
installed it on my Linux boxes. Unfortunately it works on SuSE Linux 7.0,
but not on 7.1 :-( Netscape as well as Konqueror crash when loading the
plugin.
Did anyone experience the same problem? Any suggestions?

Greetings

Gerd

:)Sorry if my english is a little rough around the edges, but...
:)
:)BOTH stdout AND stderr had to go to the logfile AND to the screen, yes.
:)
:)Sorry if my previous post was unclear about that.
:)
:)But when I try this on AIX 4.x, using ksh, like:
:)
:)cat thisfiledoesnotexist 2>&1 | tee -a logfile
:)
:)stderr still goes to the screen (the cat error message, complaining it cant
:)find the file), but *not* to the logfile...
:)
:)huh ?
:)
:)Does this mean ive found a bug... errr feature ? Or am I screwing up in
:)there somehow?
:)
:)
:)
:)

  It works for me:

$ cat thisfiledoesnotexist 2>&1 | tee -a logfile
cat: cannot open thisfiledoesnotexist

$ ls -l logfile
-rw-r--r-- 1 shahhe users 38 Feb 28 12:43 logfile

$ cat logfile
cat: cannot open thisfiledoesnotexist

I tested this on AIX 4.3.3 and AIX 4.2.1.

Some recent linux builds have been coming up with the time an hour
ahead. Claims to be PDT, but acts like mountain time. Secs since 1970
look correct when compared to some non-ntp machines, but the conversion
to day/time is funky.

As I recall, SO5.1 (you do mean 5.1 and not 5.2?) came in one big tar.gz
file, so you'll need to untar the installation files into a directory by
themselves. SO5.1 (and 5.2) comes with a _large_ PDF file (I forget the
filename) that provides complete directions for how to install it. The best
way to do it is a 'network' install (with the /network option on the command
line) for the bulk of the files, after which each user (even if you're the
only user) would run a workstation install of configuration and a few other
files into their home directories. SO5.1 has its own binary installer - you
can't use rpm to install it. The installer doesn't add anything to Gnome's
menu, so you may want to edit the Gnome menu to add entries for SO5.1.

If you're going to use Netscape under Linux and Win2K, put an entry in
/etc/fstab to mount this FAT32 partition automatically, then make your
~/.netscape a symbolic link to your Netscape user directory on the FAT32
partition. Then you have to hope that Netscape uses the same file and
subdirectory naming convention for both Linux and Windows versions (I have
no idea).
