Subject: strange behavior of "su" with KDE2.1

I recently installed KDE2.1 on a PC with RH6.2.
Everything seems to work fine, except when I try to su to root. I always
get "incorrect password". If I login in a gnome session, I have no problem
with su, even when I use konsole.
Anyone knows where this could come from ?

Thanks

After doing a deja search ( sorry forgot that it is back ), I fond a
suggestion. Try running ipcs.
So I tried that and got messages,

kernel not configured for shered memory.
kernel not configured for semaphores.
I kind of figured this, but cannot find the macros in .config to set
these up. I also cannot find the location using "make xconfig".
Can anyone help?

I'm beginning to believe that the standard way of testing hardware under
linux by compiling the kernel should be changed. I've experienced the
highest loads I've ever seen by building kde 2.1 with the '--enable-final'
option. I've seen a load of 5.89 so far, still in progress though so we
shall see...

You need to compile against their kernel source to run under their
kernel.

I had the same problem so I changed to "connect". This is a client/server
setup where the connectd daemen runs on the gateway and clients run on each
network machine. There are clients for both linux and Windows. The client
requests a connection and the daemon dials up the ISP. When it returns a
success indication to the client the user knows he can start browsing. If
several people are connected, the daemon won't drop the line until the last
one disconnects. However, when the last person finishes the line drops
immediately. There is no wait for the connection to time out. If a user
forgets to disconnect, the daemon will automatically disconnect after a
configurable delay. I use 30 minutes. Look on freshmeat.net and search for
"connect".

i have no doubts that their source is on their source cd.

and while thinking about it i came to at least one conclusion,
the proposition "RH get their source from their own source cd"
creates a loop rather than an answer, even though it may be
identical to whatever is the official and current source.

anyway, i guess ftp.gnu.org is what i was after, after all.

It's a standard parallel port but the printer is not a standard printer
-- it's one of those "multifunction" jobs that prints, faxes, scans..
Thus their Windows drivers are not "standard" either and thus the
restrictions I mentioned with regards to Windows printer sharing.

I could care less about the fax and scan functionality.. I just want to
be able to print to this from Linux!

That is one way to corrupt a terminal, but there are others too! And
there are several ways to correct it, as the multiple responses to your
post all indicate. However, there are some things you can set up to
make recovery easier.

Put this into your ~/.bashrc file:

alias sane='echo -e "\\033c";tput is2;stty sane line 1 rows $LINES columns $COLUMNS'

Then you have two options. You can type "reset", which
sometimes works, or you can type "sane" which will always work.

No it isn't. Are you unaware that srpm's by definition and design
contain the ORIGINAL SOURCE, plus PATCHES? And that even if they didn't
contain the original source (which they do) they would be obliged to
tell you where to get them, by virtue of the GPL.

You need and ISP...

Try to get DSL or Cable Modem if you really want to feel the power of
Linux....Otherwise, a regular dial-up ISP will work fine, but you'll have to
do some reading to get your modem working.

All,

I'm running both RedHat and Mandrake systems and many users are complaining
to me of a "feature" of these distributions (or perhaps Linux in general).
Here's the situation:

* open a file with vi
* exit vi

Instead of the information from vi remaining on the screen, the screen is
reset to the previous screen before vi was launched.

I have tried changing the .Xdefaults file to include:
XTerm.VT100.titeInhibit: false
or
xterm*titeInhibit: off

But neither has any effect.

Can someone please tell me how to disable this "feature" of Linux either on
a per-user basis or system-wide?

Thanks very much.

Exactly for that purpose, there was published a project in the german
