Over here in .nl you can buy USB audio devices for about $15 (output
only) that contain Philips UDA 1321 or UDA 1325 chips. The nice thing
about them is that they can output I2S signals with some extra
components. I2S is the audio format used internally in CD players, etc.
and it's easy to convert it to S/PDIF with a simple Crystal 8412
converter. For $30 worth of components and some soldering practice you
can make an S/PDIF output yourself :)
