In the meantime, I tried a bit further. In the Suse data base I found a entry 
about timing problems with USB devices. Therefore I changed my configuration 
a little bit. 
The modules usbcore usbserial and usb-ohci are no loaded during the boot 
process with the initial ramdisk. The file kernel in /etc/sysconfig now 
contains the following:
INITRD_MODULES="reiserfs usbcore usbserial usb-ohci"
I called mk_initrd and in /etc/fstab I changed the entry for the usbdevfs to 
the following:
usbdevfs             /proc/bus/usb        usbdevfs   defaults              0 0

Now, if I hit the HotSync button, I get the following:
