Have you tried using the drive's IDE interface directly?

Writing a CD requires that the data stream to be very reliable, it is
important to make sure that your computer isn't being interrupted for
tasks which delay its response to requests for data for the CD.  USB
is hard work for your processor, and for that reason alone I think
it's optimistic to expect CD burning to work reliably on Linux 2.4.21
with USB.  I don't know how many people have had successes with this
generally, perhaps we can get some feedback from others on the list.
