What is the device class? What does the contents of /proc/bus/usb/devices show 
with the device plugged in?

Probably you want to interface with the input subsystem - I think the February 
and March 2003 issues of Linux Journal might help to provide context - 
February has the kernel stuff, and March has the userspace part.
