I'm sorry.  I had overlooked your second message.  In the first you were
trying to load the generic usbserial driver for the pl2305 printer device
with product id 0x2305.  Maybe Stephen is correct in assuming there are
problems with that particular kernel and the device in question, pl2303
which is a usbserial device. (using usbserial driver pl2303)  I would try
his suggestion of moving your kernel to a later version.  Or, if you have
the spare hardware, try it on another machine with the pl2303 driver which
may prove/disprove a hardware problem.
