OK, I've got it. If I start with FC4's kernel configuration, and a vanilla kernel, the mouse works correctly. If I then turn on kernel preemption, and set HZ=1000, the problem comes up. Neither of those settings, by themselves, seem to trigger the problem. --- .config 2007-03-12 19:13:17.000000000 -0700 +++ ../test.config.2.6.19-usbproblem.9 2007-03-12 09:41:25.000000000 -0700 @@ -1,7 +1,7 @@ # # Automatically generated make config: don't edit # Linux kernel version: 2.6.17 -# Mon Mar 12 19:13:17 2007 +# Sat Mar 10 12:51:57 2007 # CONFIG_X86_32=y CONFIG_SEMAPHORE_SLEEPERS=y @@ -18,6 +18,7 @@ # CONFIG_EXPERIMENTAL=y CONFIG_BROKEN_ON_SMP=y +CONFIG_LOCK_KERNEL=y CONFIG_INIT_ENV_ARG_LIMIT=32 # @@ -141,8 +142,9 @@ CONFIG_HPET_TIMER=y CONFIG_HPET_EMULATE_RTC=y # CONFIG_PREEMPT_NONE is not set -CONFIG_PREEMPT_VOLUNTARY=y -# CONFIG_PREEMPT is not set +# CONFIG_PREEMPT_VOLUNTARY is not set +CONFIG_PREEMPT=y +CONFIG_PREEMPT_BKL=y CONFIG_X86_UP_APIC=y CONFIG_X86_UP_IOAPIC=y CONFIG_X86_LOCAL_APIC=y @@ -188,9 +190,9 @@ CONFIG_REGPARM=y # CONFIG_SECCOMP is not set # CONFIG_HZ_100 is not set -CONFIG_HZ_250=y -# CONFIG_HZ_1000 is not set -CONFIG_HZ=250 +# CONFIG_HZ_250 is not set +CONFIG_HZ_1000=y +CONFIG_HZ=1000 CONFIG_KEXEC=y # CONFIG_CRASH_DUMP is not set CONFIG_PHYSICAL_START=0x100000 @@ -3114,6 +3116,7 @@ CONFIG_DETECT_SOFTLOCKUP=y CONFIG_SCHEDSTATS=y # CONFIG_DEBUG_SLAB is not set +CONFIG_DEBUG_PREEMPT=y CONFIG_DEBUG_MUTEXES=y CONFIG_DEBUG_SPINLOCK=y CONFIG_DEBUG_SPINLOCK_SLEEP=y ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Take Surveys.
