Jason, why don't you.... Check package versions which you currently use against those available from http://www.gentoo.org/dyn/pkgs/index.xml or http://gentoo-stable.iq-computing.de/
..and see if my claim is correct about how up to date Gentoo is. Then why not have a look at a happy Gentoo box doing an upgrade (I am sure there are many Gentoo users happy to show off). I think then you may be convinced.
