You can anyway. Apple have released a root-less Quartz-enabled port of XFree86 for Mac OS X[1]. This is not the first port of X to Mac OS X, but it's probably the nicest at present. With the likes of Mac-On-Linux, you can even run Linux as your base OS and run Mac OS 9 or Mac OS X inside MOL for Photoshop or whatever.
