Is there any way to get at the bearings of the drive? My profile is easily
the loudest drive I've ever heard, save the 2 gb Barracuda I threw on the
floor repeatedly and then powered up (it dances across the floor now! Don't
worry, it had many bad sectors before I 'stressed' it.) I took the brush
totally off for testing, it didn't get any quieter, so my guess is it has to
be the bearings. Have you ever oiled a frozen computer fan to bring it back
to life, then listened as the little bits of dirt hit the bearings, and it
makes a little ting sound? My drive does that all on its own :o

Is there a way to quiet a ProFile, perhaps by replacing a fan?
The ProFile has no fan.
Usually the ProFile's "jet-engine" noise can be nearly eliminated by
adjusting the static brush.
The static brush touches the bottom end of the spindle axle, and after
some
period of wear, can vibrate quite loudly.
If you (carefully) remove the hard disk assembly from the ProFile chassis,
and remove the circuit board on the bottom, you will see the static brush.
A small tweak sideways is usually all that is required to change the point
of contact and stop the excessive noise.
Make sure that the brush is still making contact with the axle so that it
can do its job, and do NOT "lubricate" the point of contact.
