Ok then I don't have any more advice because I hadn't used that appender.

Here is my complete log4j.xml configuration file:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<!DOCTYPE log4j:configuration SYSTEM "log4j.dtd">

<log4j:configuration xmlns:log4j="http://jakarta.apache.org/log4j/";>

        <appender name="SYSLOG" class="org.apache.log4j.net.SyslogAppender">
                <param name="SyslogHost" value="localhost"/>
                <param name="Facility" value="USER"/>
                <param name="FacilityPrinting" value="true"/>
                <layout class="org.apache.log4j.PatternLayout">
                        <param name="ConversionPattern" value="%p: %c - %m"/>
                </layout>
        </appender>

        <appender name="STDOUT" class="org.apache.log4j.ConsoleAppender">
                <layout class="org.apache.log4j.PatternLayout">
                        <param name="ConversionPattern" value="%d [%t] %-5p %c %x -
%m%n"/>
                </layout>
        </appender>

        <appender name="LOGFILE" class="org.apache.log4j.FileAppender">
          <param name="File" value="/tmp/log4j.log" />
                <layout class="org.apache.log4j.PatternLayout">
                        <param name="ConversionPattern" value="%d [%t] %-5p %c %x -
%m%n"/>
                </layout>
        </appender>

        <root>
                <level value="debug"/>
                <appender-ref ref="STDOUT"/>
                <appender-ref ref="LOGFILE"/>
                <appender-ref ref="SYSLOG"/>
        </root>

</log4j:configuration>

I am getting messages to the console and also in the log file, so I am
assuming that the log4j config is working and therefore something on the
syslog-ng side isn't configured as it should be.

Thanks for the debug tip, I was completely unaware of that one. This is the
console output when running with the debug flag set. As you can see at the
