Great, I will do that unity-2d feels faster than 3D, but it is very hard to tell if unity-2d is just as fast as Gnome2/MATE. Are there way to performance test that? Right now have I install Linux Mint's fork of Gnome 2 http://www.howtoforge.com/install-gnome-3-with-mint-gnome-shell-extensions-or-mate-on-ubuntu-11.10-oneiric-ocelot-p2 but it replaces 3 of the Ubuntu packages in doing so.
