OK, on to my next newbie problem:
On my Lubuntu 12.04 test network, I have some client/terminals that shut
down completely, and others that stop after a screen like this:
.... * Asking all remaining processes to terminate ....
[91.414931] SysRq : Power Off
[91.428731] Power down.
[OK]
[91.560118] SysRq : Power Off
[91.560285] Power down.
* All processes ended within 1 seconds .... [OK]
For machines on which this happens, I have to force them off with the
button button held down.
Interestingly, if I choose Reboot instead of Shutdown, there is no
hang. It proceeds smoothly to the POST routine and begins booting up
again as it should.
--------------
If I connect the same no-shutdown machine to my Edubuntu test network,
the behavior is similar. Whether I choose Shutdown or Reboot from the
desktop (or whatever that is called in Linux), it dumps me back into the
login screen. If from there I choose Preferences: Shutdown, it hangs at
a white screen (with no messages visible) and I have to force it down
with the power button. If I choose instead Preferences: Reboot, it
proceeds smoothly to the POST routine and reboots.
(By the way, I observe that on the server, Shutdown/Reboot from the
desktop does not deposit me at the login screen as an intermediate step
to choose Shutdown/Reboot again, which seems like better behavior than I
see at the terminal.)
--------------
In case it is related, I could add that these machines that don't shut
down completely are also the ones for which the LTSP boot process
notifies me:
/piix4_smbus 0000:00:0.7.3: Host SMBus controller not enabled/
s/aned disabled; edit /etc/default/saned/
/Host SMBus controller not enabled/
Can I fix this no-shutdown behavior?
(And help me simplify my terminology, please: I've been writing things
like host/server and terminal/client. I'd like one word for each.)
