It sounds like there are some interesting things in the works but, for grins, I put together a really ugly hack that allows password changes in ldm.
I understand why further development of the current process is not a good idea. I use both Gentoo and Ubuntu. The dialogue is not the same between the two distros. As was said, scraping all the permutations would be a real bite. I currently have it working in a virtual environment using Ubuntu 12.04. It's going on a real test server with limited users tomorrow morning for testing. I'll see how it goes.
