I understand your point, but unfortunately it's not the case. Ubuntu 9.04 did work wonderfully with the NetworkManager. Then, there was a regression, at 9.10. It was not exactly a regression, but a well documented bug, reported very early during development time, that was not fixed, by pure neglect, up to the release time, and that has become a huge fiasco. Later on, Ubunto fixed it in a patched kernel. In case you are interested to follow the details, please look at this hungry letter, here: http://www.linux.org.za/Lists-Archives/glug-chat-0911/msg00017.html "...To get online, I used to click the NetworkManager icon and select "Vodacom", which would connect through my Huawei E220 3G card. I click the NetworkManager icon in 9.10 and there's nothing. I unplug and replug the 3G card, wait, wait, wait, still nothing. It shows up on lsusb, and works on my other computer running 9.04. I try to manually set up a 3G connection in NetworkManager, in the absense of any hardware, but that doesn't cause the option to connect through 3G to show up. Eventually Googling, I discover that it's a kernel bug that was patched on 13th October (http://marc.info/?l=linux-usb&m=125540979118724&w=2) which is 2 days before Ubuntu went into kernel freeze, but they still shipped with a buggy kernel despite numerous complaints on the relevant launchpad bug (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/446146). It seems to be a real testament to Ubuntu's (lack of) quality that even now, *6 days* after the release, there is still no update that fixes this major bug." ... And here, the above mentioned bug 446146, at launchpad https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/446146 It is worth noting that any distro that is developed to be light, to be used in low resource machines, namely netboxes, favouring it's portability, has all to gain if it provides support for the today very popular USB mobile 3g broadband, as with it, one may be able to access the net with it's laptop or netbox, everywhere in the outdoors. And no, wicd do not support 3g modems, nor does intend to support then in the near future. In conclusion, I would strongly suggest you to make your better effort to support those devices, out of the box, considering the obvious advantages it will offer to your targeted users.
