Arto, Jon,
Your points on orchestration are absolutely well-taken and I could not
agree more. If any performing group were interested in performing those
pieces - I doubt it but it is not up to me to decide - there would be a
lot of work to do: in the spagnuola for instance the two lute parts
would have to be split into several more, probably including a part -
may be two - for baroque guitar. This would give texture to the piece as
well as make the parts humanly playable. The flute part could be split
similarly - German flute and recorder perhaps - and may be the bass too.
I suppose that when you look at actual performance, you take into
account what's there also: available instruments, talents, etc. and you
work specifically in that direction.
In the meantime, what's the point of sharing those sketches: personally
I am working on two things, the development of Django, in the hope that
it may fall in the hands of someone who actually knows what they are
doing... and finding a possible idiom for modern compositions that could
integrate early instruments as something else than just an exotic
flavoring.
The only piece that I worked on while making a conscious effort at
playability is a lute duet - i.e. it is not more difficult that the
duets in the Pickering lute book - is the Bells of Walsingham, number 6
on http://cbsr26.ucr.edu/wlkfiles/MyDuets/MyLuteDuets.html, but then is
it worthwhile? I had fun doing it, as a sort of little pilgrimage in
time, that is already rewarding in itself.
Best wishes,
Alain
