When I was at Oakland University, 1970something one of the requirements was
ensamble playing. The director, Lsyle Nordstrom, organized consort groups
large and small. I don't remember having any serious issues with tuning.
We all tuned to the same "A"440 and away we went. I never noticed anything
being so out of tune that it colored the performance. Is it not possible we
are placing too much significance on this issue? We know that the foundering
fathers played in all sorts of groups. Do you think they agonized over the
problem the way some of us are doing?
