Act Now to Secure Uniform Airline Standards for Musical Instruments
Earlier this month, the House of Representatives passed the Federal
Aviation Administration (FAA) Reauthorization Bill (H.R. 658), which
corresponds to Senate Bill 223. Both bills include a provision
affecting the status of musical instruments as carry-on and/or
checkable luggage. The Senate's version allows any instrument to be
taken on board a plane, as long as it can be stored safely in the
overhead compartment or under the seat. S. 223 also includes provisions
for "oversize" instruments; musicians may either buy a seat on the
airplane for a large instrument or choose to check it.
The House version allows the FAA latitude in changing the regulations,
potentially leaving discretion to individual airlines. The two versions
will now be reconciled in a Senate/House conference committee.
Please urge your legislators to support the provisions in the Senate
bill. [1]Contact your legislators . This is crucial legislation for our
   field.
