There are lots of knots in the soundboards of harpsichords, both period and modern. Purely cosmetic as far as the makers are concerned. I suppose that the main worry for lute makers would be the knot becoming detached and leaving a hole in the soundboard. It would be a shame to see one's lute be turned into a nest box. Best Matthew
