I've worked with some variety of meantone tuning, and it seems to suit my lute and ear fairly well. However, I wonder what should be used as the base or "0" pitch? It seems a lot of the music I've played is in F , C or Bb. Should one of these be the starting point for interval adjustments? Should tuning be for the best sound from the instrument itself, as for solo playing, or set to an A for ensemble work?
