What isn't working? Exactly? Can you preview DVI? If so, then the LaTeX

Oh, simpler (yes, I can generate PDFs, DVIs, etc):
File -> Export
has only a
File -> Export -> Custom
So you've got stuff on the View menu but not on the Export menu?
If I select LaTeX there, it only has disabled buttons. I can enter random
stuff into the command below, but it does not help me as it does not
generate
any file.

I think you've got some kind of configuration problem. What platform are
you on? Try renaming your local LyX directory (~/.lyx/, or whatever) and
letting LyX regenerate it.
