You may think this whole painting stuff is easy to fix but believe me, with current LyX architecture, it is very complicated. Anyway, I think those missing optimizations have nothing to do with your present slowness problem.

Yes because the mathed drawing is not (yet) optimized so any row that contains a single math inset will trigger a full screen redraw; while a text only row will be redraw only current row in general.

it seems we triggered threshold of 100% load on older boxes (last comments in bug 4054).

In those boxes I really recommend to enable 'Instant preview'. This will allow the text oppmization to proceed.
