You may think this whole painting stuff is easy to fix but believe me,
with current LyX architecture, it is very complicated. Anyway, I think
those missing optimizations have nothing to do with your present
slowness problem.
btw is it expected that computing redraws on paragraph edit with maths
takes 2x higher load of cpu compared to the situation no math ivolved ?
Yes because the mathed drawing is not (yet) optimized so any row that
contains a single math inset will trigger a full screen redraw; while a
text only row will be redraw only current row in general.
it seems we triggered threshold of 100% load on older boxes
(last comments in bug 4054).
In those boxes I really recommend to enable 'Instant preview'. This will
allow the text oppmization to proceed.
