HiDPI is used for monitors with really high resolution, where text and
UI would be too small.
On plain Ubuntu, I can change that in the Display pane of the control
panel. Typically, people use a 2:1 zoom ratio (but I do not use it myself).
Assuming that Pavel did find the right commit by bisection, you could
try to set
export QT_ENABLE_HIGHDPI_SCALING=0
before running LyX.
