The only hard crash in mathed that I am aware of happens when one tries to define a recursive macros due to the "infinite nesting" when drawing the expanded version. Since there is not yet a possibility to check which macros are already used in some expression, there in no easy workaround yet. It is solvable, though... The rest is "unintuitive" behaviour, slight mis-drawings (super and subscripts are too far above/below the baseline compared to TeX) etc., and open feature requests...
