LyX may not be perfect for DocBook, but it can already be used to do very
usable production work. See for example here:

http://www.karakas-online.de/EN-Book/

or here:

http://www.karakas-online.de/gnu-linux-tools-summary/

or here:

http://www.karakas-online.de/myLinuxTips/

All these documents, some of which are even 500 pages large, have been made
with LyX, then exported to SGML and transformed from there with the aid of my
lyxtox script. The process is described in great detail (200 pages) in
"Document processing with LyX and SGML":

http://www.karakas-online.de/mySGML/

The scripts presented there work only with a somewhat older version of LyX
(1.2.0), but RPMs (both binary and source) for this versions are offered for
both older (7.x) and newer (9.x) SuSE Linux systems in:

http://www.karakas-online.de/mySGML/lyx.html

The document itself is available (in best DocBook tradition) in many formats,
all created from the original LyX document, from:

http://www.karakas-online.de/mySGML/formats.html

As Andreas already said, the LyX development team is working towards the goal
of making the "tweaks" that are currently necessary (and described in the above
document) obsolete. This may take some time - in the meantime grab the whole
package from

http://www.karakas-online.de/mySGML/formats.html

and do your work with LyX 1.2.0 - you will get professional documents with
images, equations, Table of Contents, Index, List of Figures and even
Bibliography with RefDB (http://refdb.sourceforge.net) and Mathematics (even in
HTML!) in HTML, PDF, PS, TXT and even RTF - today, here and now. :-)
