Is it possible to insert a section without numbering, and asking that it is put in the table of contents? In my case, I would like to add an annex at the end of my thesis, which is obviously not a "part" itself, and I would like it to be in the TOC, with no number...
Look up \frontmatter, \mainmatter and \backmatter. They take care of many of these problems (and do specific
numbering, too).
