By "darwinports denemo page", do you mean http:// denemo.darwinports.com/ ? If so, please do not use that as a canonical source of information. darwinports.com is not and has never been owned by the DarwinPorts project; we have no control over what is displayed there. DarwinPorts is now called MacPorts and the only official web site is http://www.macports.org/ .

+universal is a variant the MacPorts infrastructure makes available to all ports. It has been added recently, and ports are assumed to work with it, unless they explicitly declare that they do not. If denemo does not work with the +universal variant, then the verbiage "universal_variant no" should be added to the denemo portfile.
