I have rebuilt my kernel and managed the modules as you have suggested and
I find that DVD playback is indeed good - so I am not sure what the
difference was but it may well have been the modules used for the dvd.

When I insert a DVD and it attempts to autoplay in gxine or select play
from the mount tab in the panel, gxine generates the error:

The xine engine failed to start.
No demuxer found - stream format not recognised.

However (as mentioned elsewhere on the web) if I select DVD from the file
menu it plays!  Annoyance not show stopper.

I have already looked hard at my uses for gxine etc - to no avail;
