Are you sure you really used the generic ATI driver? AFAIK the ati
driver provided with x.org does NOT (yet) support the x1600 card.

I guess you were using the kernel frame buffer but that is a
completely different driver with no acceleration, even for 2D. Or
maybe it was the generic vesa driver if you boot from BIOS. I can't
use the native 1680x1050 resolution using the VESA driver. I can only
have 1400 x something.
