Reset various NVRAM settings, the most obvious one is the boot chime
sound level. When suspend2 complains that the memory size doesn't match,
this typically helps.

Would you get as far as rEFIt? I had seemingly random shutdowns
occasionally (from seconds after power on to somewhat after logging into
X). Presumably this was due to overheating when fans got confused - it
is somewhat hard to tell when they do NOT work at all, but I was easy to
tell when they were locked at full speed.

Possibly. Once the ACPI stuff got confused I guess just about anything
can han happen. I get the feeling that a confused SMC can do similar
things - I tried putting a heartbeat on the keyboard backlight and it
froze my box solid after a few cycles...

Well, lucky for me, MacOSX was also confused about various bits, such as
the battery - I have a feeling this made a full swap easier to get to.
