Has anyone ever tried to get the SMC specs from Apple?  Is there even
a general consensus on what it is that's eating up so much more power
in Linux than on OS X?

Kai, why do you say the CPU is at 1000 MHz more often in OS X (how can
did you see this)?  When I'm in Linux using Beryl I noticed the fans
are much more active.  I think they come on at a much lower
temperature than they do in OS X (in OS X the CPUs have to get _very_
hot before the fans ever kick in).

My first guess would have been that powering down the GPU would have
significantly improved the battery life but Core Duo owners (I have a
C2D) claim this is not so.  Is the problem more crappy ATI drivers?
In OS X I've noticed that if my processors are idling at even a few
percent (because of some stupid javascript webpage) then the battery
life is much reduced.  Is it possible that there's just too much going
on in the background in Linux?

It might be useful if someone with a core duo tries running their
machine in a minimal mode (very few background processes) and GPU
throttled and sees if they can get better power usage.

I've asked Apple to release the SMC specs but I don't know if they
will because it seems that  they claim on their webpage that even in
windows the battery life will be reduced meaning that they didn't
write SMC drivers for windows.  Perhaps this is part of the hardware
that they want to keep secret.
