hi Jon. i put the file into /etc/hal/fdi/information/ , restarted
dbus, and voila, it worked! thanks for the tip. i'm still curious
about you being able to run the command ``hal-stop-polling'' though,
as it's simply not available to me.

after implementing this change, did you notice much of a change in
your laptop's power consumption? i watched PowerTOP's output for a
couple of minutes before and after disabling polling and didn't see
any change at all. my 15" MBP C2D hovers around 29.3 to 30.6W .
