I had a hard time getting the microphone to work on my MBP C2D, but
finally got it. At the end, it wasn't a kernel matter, but a mixer
one. I'm using a 2.6.22 kernel from Ubuntu. This is my configuration
in natural language (I can post the output of amixer if requested).
Check if it works for you or anybody else:

1) Run alsamixer.
2) In the "Playback" view (press F3):
-Front, Surround, Center, LFE, Side and Line In unmuted.
-Mic as Output and IEC958 muted.
    -Input Source: Mic.
-Volume levels as you wish. I have everything but PCM (which I use
as master volume level) at the top.
3) In the "Capture" view (press F4):
    -Capture level at 79.
    -Digital level at 78.
    -Mux level at 50.
These levels are very significative. I found that small changes
(specially on the "Mux" level) can get the mic to sound very low or
not sound at all.

Tell me if it worked. I've graved this configuration on stone with fire.
