Press and hold the menu key when (or after) the message is shown, not earlier. It needs to be pressed after linux kernel boots or the pressed key state is not recognized. Bootmenu should pop up no matter how much you messed up your rootfs.
Did something went really wrong ? and what ?
If you can still boot from flash then it is not so bad. You can copy flash to mmc and try again.
