Search the mailing list archives for any of dbus-monitor, dbus-s or 
dbus-scripts -- all three do what you need (and are variants of the same 
program).  Do not forget you need to monitor the system dbus in order to get 
connectivity signals.

Note that, as the earlier reply pointed out, this code does make use of the 
gtk main loop.

Alternatively, install my dbus-scripts package and use that to call your code 
any way you want when the signals happen.
