Actually I'm not sure if this was changed/solved in 3.0 (had no time to
check in depth) but there are two issues with 2.0/2.1 network system.
1. only one network type can be opened (discussed in mentioned thread above)
2. lack of extensibility - hardcoded set of possible types of
connections (wlan,ppp)
As for 2. I would like to have some plugin system or one additional
generic network type that can be easily hooked into. Something similar
like current DUMMY IAP but it should call custom code on
connection/disconnection. Current reason for this is to integrate
Bluetooth PAN connection type seamlessly but there can be other custom
types of connecions in future. Even if 1. is decided to be too much
work, we can implement VPN over this custom network type.
