Here are some specific things that I would like to see:
1. Free Software tools for creating a complete image to be flashed,
(that's called a fiasco image, right?)
2. A Free Software tool for flashing that image
3. An image built from only Free Software, that leads to as much
functionality as possible, (even if not all hardware components are
entirely functional)
The above seem like pre-requisites before a self-sustaining community
could form around the device, (that is, a community that could trust
itself to continue to be able to play with the device in interesting
ways even after the manufacturer might lose interest in any specific
model).
Of course, for any pieces that cannot be made available as Free
Software for whatever reason, it would be beneficial to know those
reasons. And it would be ideal to have sufficient documentation so
that the community could work on free replacements.
