Community members at Ilug-Cochin,
I have
been associated with Ilug-cochin since 2004. I joined for the classes
along with my dear friend Venkat. We both completed our linux basic
education under the guidance of Balakrishnan Sir.
Its
absolutely sad that the Ilug meeting and mailing list has turned into
very few peoples' fiefdom. Those who don't stick to diktats of the
so-called coordinator are either shunted out by moderation or such
person gets bad publicity. The coordinator never comes to light. This
community is not transparent and is not read to deliberate on
discussing sensitive issues. Transparency and democracy is very much
wanting in this august institution. Many members who were initially
active and enthusiastic had their fire died down due to this dogmatic
approach due to which we seldom see patronage from our fellow
members. For these many years of existence of this Ilug-Cochin, it
should have grown leaps and bounds in organisation structure, rather
we end up meeting 4th Sunday of every month. In fact we should have
been organising workshops, events and seminars. We have failed to
attract the interest of next generation due to this lethargic
approach. We have grown for 17 years but still have not been able to
attain maturity. All thoughts and ideas are struck down in the name
of commercialization.
Following
points needs to be considered while giving legal life to our
community which I am told will happen soon:
* Trust which has already been formed - I would like to add the trust
members should be part of the meeting.
* 2/3rd's of Trustees should be present at every meeting.
* Decisions should be taken by this Board of Trustees in approval of
the members.
* The board of trustees should retire by rotation.
* Member who does not attend 75% of the meetings should be ineligible
to be nominated to Board of Trustees.
* There should Rules and Bye laws for the Ilug-Cochin which is covered
in the trust deed.
* The trust should meet annually and all members should try to attend
it.
* Important decisions should be taken during such Annual meetings.
* Tenure of coordinator should be fixed for a limited period and his
powers should also be restricted to coordinating and organising the events,
moderating mails, giving suggestions and their like.
* Signature of the coordinator should contain name and contact number.
* There should be a process by which abusive or hate mails are
moderated by giving everyone an opportunity of being heard.
* All the above details should be available for easy access for the
members in an abridged format in the website or the complete set with the
coordinator.
I would
also like to draw reference to the point that the mails to the
mailinglist were moderated citing IT Act. Just drawing a vague
reference to an legislation is unheard of without mentioning the
relevant provisions of the legislation.
Its very
disturbing for the members of the community that we are no one when
it comes to trust. If that be so please announce it officially that
members are rest iced only to use the mailing list and no other
efforts will be appreciated.
With the
return of our senior-most member of community, Balakrishnan Sir, we
all expect a new lease of life for the Ilug-Cochin and things are
conducted in a more transparent, fair manner giving every aggrieved
person his space to air his grievance.
These
issues should have been put on the agenda before the meeting and be
deliberated. Hope to see these as the main agenda for the next
monthly meet.
