I also have long wanted such changes.  I am now testing my first mailing
list with non-techy Windows folks and the default Mailman info page is
very confusing  to them.  There are other changes that would help them,
too, such as eliminating the extended discussion on the default Welcome
page about mailing list commands--those are for more "advanced" users
IMHO.

On the Welcome page I would make the following text optional or else
hide it under a separate link for advanced use:

# remove or move the following: =================
You can also make such adjustments via email by sending a message to:

 [email protected]

with the word `help' in the subject or body (don't include the
quotes), and you will get back a message with instructions.
# end of removed or moved text =================
