What is your incoming MTA? Some MTA's (e.g., exim) can be configured to deliver mail to Mailman programatically and don't use aliases. Postfix can be integrated with Mailman so that Mailman manages list aliases automatically. Sendmail requires you to manually install aliases for each Mailman list in /etc/aliases.
